Over/Under: 59

Stanford

The Stanford Cardinal are coming into this game with a ton of momentum. After an opening game against Sacramento State they have played UCLA on the road and then Wake Forest at home. Stanford beat UCLA on the road 35-0 in an absolutely dominating performance. Then they came home and blasted Wake Forest 68-24. Yes, they scored 68 points!

The Cardinal are led by Andrew Luck, who is a terrific sophomore quarterback. Luck was very good as a freshman last year, but he appears to have made great strides this season. You can count on Andrew Luck being a starter in the NFL before too terribly long. What do his numbers look like so far this year? In three games Luck has completed 64% of his passes and has 10 touchdowns, while throwing no interceptions. One of Luck’s top wide receivers, Ryan Whalen, is expected to miss this game with an arm injury. The running back position isn’t cemented yet, but Stanford has several guys who are all very capable. Just when you thought he couldn’t do anything more, Andrew Luck actually has 13 carries for 140 yards so far this year. The Stanford defense has performed very well so far this year, but they haven’t been tested too much. The front four are a bit of a question mark, especially against a solid rushing attack. Overall, this is a very good Stanford team that could make a lot of noise this year.

Notre Dame

Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish didn’t fare well against the Michigan schools, as they lost in the last few seconds against both Michigan and Michigan State in consecutive weeks. Now they head home to take on the #17 ranked Stanford Cardinal.

The Notre Dame offense has been pretty solid this year, as long as Dayne Crist is under center. Crist has done a nice job learing Kelly’s offense quickly. On the year Crist has thrown seven touchdowns and just two interceptions. Last week against Michigan State he threw for 369 yards. The ground game hasn’t gotten going the way Notre Dame needs it to, but Armando Allen is a bright spot in the backfield. The offensive line has struggled a bit and they’ll need to do a better job in the coming weeks. Kyle Rudolph is a star at the tight end position, and he provides a nice security blanket for Crist. The main reason the Fighting Irish are 1-2 right now is their poor run defense. Michigan’s Denard Robinson ran for 258 yards by himself, then Michigan State racked up 203 yards last week. If Notre Dame is going to beat the best teams, the defensive front must step up and stop the run. Stanford doesn’t have a great rushing attack, but Notre Dame must be able to pressure Andrew Luck or he’ll pick apart this defense.

Stanford vs. Notre Dame College Football Free Pick:

Notre Dame’s defense has struggled this year, and they are facing a terrific quarterback in Andrew Luck. Stanford’s defense hasn’t matched up against an offense as good as Notre Dame yet, so they will probably give up some points too. I lean toward Stanford -4.5 in this game, but I think the best play is over 59 points. Both of these teams should be able to score early and often on Saturday!
