The Baltimore orioles and the LA Angels are both in the playoff hunt, so as we head into the final 1/3 of the season, this becomes a huge series for both clubs. Kevin Gausman has been an adequate starter for the O's at 2-2 with a 3.97 ERA, but they might need more than adequate tonight going against the Angel's Andrew Heaney. Heaney is 5-1 and deservingly so with his 1.97 ERA. Heaney has made 7 big league starts and he has yet to allow more than 2 runs in any of them. O's have been leaking oil all season on the road, and are 7-20 in their last 27 on the road vs a winning team. Angels have been sucking up a lot of wins as a home favorite, where they are an impressive 30-12 in their last 42. Make the play on LA.

The Cincinnati Reds came to the realization they were not a contender this season, so they cashed in a big chip, and dealt Johnny Cueto to Kansas City, in a move to reduce payroll, and build a better future. The Reds produced just 6 total runs in 3 games at home vs St. Louis, and with morale already low on this team, it is not the best thing for them to be embarking on a 10 game road trip. Arizona is 8-4 over their last 12 games, and are thinking they are still in the race. Their next 9 games are vs Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and Atlanta, and if they take care of business, they may very well find themselves in contention. Reds 28-61 in their last 89 on the road, and fit a bad situation tonight, that is 20-60 against them. Make the play on Arizona.

The St. Louis Cardinals have the best record in baseball, and they can thank their strong pitching for the record, as the offense has quite often put pressure on the pitching, as it has been inconsistent, and the weakness of the team. The Cards have not exactly played their best baseball over their last 33 games as they have been a pedestrian 18-15. The fact is the Brewers over a similar stretch have been 22-17, and in reality, the better team over the past 6 weeks. The Cards have shown some recent weakness on the road facing a right hander as they are just 2-5 in their last 7. The Brewers are a lot better than their overall record, and have been a pesky team, and one that has won 3 straight, and will be up for the challenge to knock off the best team in baseball to this point. The Minnesota Twins have hung in the playoff race all season, but have hit a bump in the road. The Twins have dropped 6 straight games, and were just swept by a vastly improved Toronto team. The Twins problems have been short term, while the Cleveland Indians have struggled for the entire season, and their latest 4-10 mark over their last 14 games sees them sitting in the basement of the AL Central. Mike Pelfrey worked 8 shutout innings in his last start, and already has a game this season vs Cleveland allowing 2 runs over 7 innings. Cody Anderson got off to a fine start, but his last 3 have been messy as he is 0-2 with a gaudy 8.40 ERA. The Boston Red Sox added a lot of parts to their roster prior to this season, and felt that they had strengthened the club to compete, but that simply has not been the case. One of those pieces was Joe Kelly. Kelly has allowed 4 or more earned runs in each of his last 4 outings. Kelly is in survival mode right now, and if he wants to retain a spot in the rotation, he is going to have to deliver tonight. He has appeared to have done that, as the Sox own a 5-2 record when he takes the mound as a dog from +110 to +150. The Tigers offense is not the same as it has been in recent years, and they are now 2-7 in their last 9 following a win, and 0-5 in their last 5 after scoring 5+ in their last game. The Houston Astros are a very young and talented team. They paid their dues with some really awful seasons, but the young players are coming of age, and they have some quality pitching at the top of the rotation. The issue of a young team is learning to win on the road, and not to panic when things are going badly. Houston is facing all of those issues, as they are 38-18 at home, but a very poor 22-31 on the road. Houston has started their road trip by getting swept vs Texas, and it has extended their road losing streak to 5 games. half the Astros road wins have been behind Kuechel, and McHugh. The Minnesota Twins, are in sharp contrast, as they have no big names, and no big arms on the roster. So what has the difference been between these teams on the season? One lone game in the loss column! Hats off to Mark Buehrle, who has had a great season thus far, but opposing him tonight, with an equally great season is Kyle Gibson. Gibson has matched Buehrle pitch for pitch on the season. The Twins are very lethal against left handed pitching where they average 5 runs a game, vs 3.7 runs per game vs right handers, so they certainly are a live dog here. The LA Dodgers expect to win a lot of games, especially when Grienke, and Kershaw toe the slab. they will send Zack Greinke to the mound for this one, and he has had a Cy Young type of season thus far. This is a dangerous spot for the Dodgers however, for a couple of reasons. Greinke has never been quite the same pitcher on the road as he has been at home in his career. The numbers are actually quite staggering, as he owns a career 105-58 mark pitching at home, but just 65-91 on the road. The odds on this game treat him as if he is pitching at home. Secondly, perhaps the most anticipated matchup of the season takes place tomorrow with Kershaw facing off with Cole for the Pirates, and the Dodgers may already be heading to Pittsburgh in their mind. The Phillies are also 13-4 in their last 17 games, and have played like a champion for the last 3 weeks. Make the play on Philadelphia.

The Giants are 1/2 game behind the Cubs for the final wild card spot in the NL. Madison Bumgarner was the best pitcher in baseball a year ago in the post-season where he perhaps had the best post-season performance ever. That ha inflated expectations, and right now he is not pitching well. Bumgarner was lit up for 6 runs in his last start, and closed out the month of July pitching to a 4.89 ERA. The Minnesota Twins have hung around and have been in contention all the way into August, and that has been a big surprise. Despite of that they are still getting little respect from the odds makers, and will take the field tonight as a very sizeable dog. Minnesota has been known for plucking gems out of their system, and putting them on stage and getting results. Tonight it will be Tyler Duffey, who possesses a 2.66 ERA in 21 minor league starts at AA and AAA. Toronto counters with Drew Hutchison who has a record that is a whole lot better than he deserves. Hutchinson owns a 9-2 record, but his ERA ranks amongst the worst in the league at 5.42. Twins have had a penchant for rising from the ashes of losses in the first 2 games of a series, to rally back in game 3 where they are now 6-1 in their last 7 in this spot. Jays on the other hand just 5-11 in series game 3 behind Hutchinson, who has not been able to close the deal. Make the play on Minnesota.

The Rockies are 16 games below .500, and sadly they have not been much better at home this season, with a lineup tailored for their unique home park, as they are just 24-28 here on the season. Pitching has always been the problem, and they are prematurely launching the big league career of Jon Gray, after just 276 innings in the minors. The Mariners are riding the hot bat of Nelson Cruz, who homered for the 4th straight game, extending his hitting streak to 14 games, where he owns 9 HR's. Gray was just 6-6 with a 4.33 ERA in AAA, and starting at Coors is no easy task for even a seasoned pitcher. This could be one of the top, if not the top pitching matchups of the season in the AL. Chris Sale will do battle with Chris Archer, and both have been dominating on the mound this season. Sale has already fanned 177 on the season, with Archer right on his heels with 173. Archer, despite his success, has not won in each of his last 6 starts, as the Ray's offense continues to struggle, and for the season he is just 9-8. Sale doesn't pitch too many bad games, but his last outing may of been his worst all season, so a bounce back vs a soft line up should suit him well, especially at home. This game fits a high octane pitching match up profile that is directing attention to Chicago here, as the situation is 84-33 in their favor over the last 12 years. Rays just 3-7 in their last 10 vs a pitcher with a WHIP of less than 1.15, and Sox are 32-15 in Sales last 47 home starts. Make the play on Chicago.

The Mets offense is starting to heat up, and after scoring 10+ runs just twice up until July 24th, they have now done so twice in their last 9 games. The Mets attack was upgraded prior to the trade deadline with the addition of Yoenis Cespedes, and he delivered a trio of doubles and 4 RBI last night. The St. Louis Cardinals have been the best team in baseball this season as we head into the final 2 minths of the regular season. One reason has been the fact that they take the field on most night's with a solid pitching advantage. That will again be the case tonight as the Cards send John Lackey to the mound with his 9-6 record on the season and 2.78 ERA. He will be opposed by right hander Anthony DeSclafani for the Reds. The key here is the fact that the Cards are taking on a right hander. They have absolutely dominated right handed pitching this season where they are 53-24 which has given them a +23.2% ROI against righties. Left handers have been their demise, where they are 14-14 on the season at -10.2% ROI. Hard to buck these odds, and the Cards have been 6-0 in their last 6 as road chalk from -110 to -150. Jake Arrieta has been more than the Cubs could have hoped for with 8 straight quality starts and an overall record of 11-6 backed by a solid 2.62 ERA. J.A. Happ needed a change of scenery, and I would expect him to thrive in Pittsburgh. The Cubs have had trouble getting started in a series, as they have dropped 6 of their last 8 series openers, and will face a dominating home team in the Pirates now 66-30 in their last 96 at home. What looks like the ultimate mismatch, likely is, but when you consider the odds, there is no question where the historical value is. Clayton Kershaw commands respect every time he sets foot on the mound, but when does it reach a point where it becomes a serious overlay? We have reached that point. Kershaw has pitched well, but with the Dodgers at just 8-9 in his 17 starts, he is far from automatic. The fact is over his storied career the Dodgers are just 12-10 as a home favorite of -225 and up, and the dog has a +45.9% ROI in the 22 games. Looking at all MLB lines posted at greater than -350 over the last 12 years, the home favorite is 17-9, for an ROI of +31.8% on the dog. Kershaw hasn't exactly been a Philly killer in his career at 2-4. Philly has a pair of hot hitters in Hernandez (.419 last 7), and Galvis (.429 last 7). Just too much value here to leave on the table, make the play on Philadelphia.
