The state of affairs in the AL playoff race is such that the Tampa Bay Rays sit just 5 games removed from the final wild card slot, despite a record that has them at 2 games under .500. Tampa if you recall was 9 games back starting September of 2011 and made the playoffs, so they feel they are alive and well. Matt Moore finally had a better look after Tommy John surgery, and threw a strong 78 pitches his last time out, and will be extended here. The Rays are in a great historical situation, one that has gone 96-41 the last 137 times it has come up, and it plays on certain teams with a hot offense, which has been the case for this team of late. Make the play on Tampa Bay.

The San Diego padres made some off season moves that they thought would bolster both the pitching, and hitting, but they have had a disappointing season. They have started to look at some young players, and some of them have been swinging the bat really well. The Dodgers had a hole at the bottom of their rotation, and decided Matt Latos would be a good candidate to fill it, but at 4-9 on the season with a 4.76 ERA, he has not been the right guy. Since they acquired him he is even worse, covering 4 starts he is 0-2 with a 6.05 ERA. Dodgers are just 3-8 in their last 11 on the road, including 1-5 against right handers. San Diego has put together a 5-1 run at home vs a team that has a losing road record in their last 6. Make the play on San Diego.

Liriano has made it through juat 33 innings in the 6 starts, has allowed 40 hits, while pitching to a woeful 5.45 ERA. meanwhile, Milwaukee starter Taylor Jungmann, has been the dominating pitcher. Jungmann is 8-5 with a 2.48 ERA on the season, and has outpitched Liriano. Jungmann has already worked a 7 inning gem vs Pittsburgh thos season, working 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, and a single run. This is a big time pitching match up, with Ross Bumgarner squaring off with Zack Greinke. While there is not a whole lot to pick and choose from here, one thing stands out above all others. Zack Greinke has the widest home vs road dichotomy of any pitcher in baseball. he is 67-92 on the road in his career, good for a -16.5% ROI playing on him, while at the same time he is 107-58 at home, with a +15.5% ROI playing on him. Throw in the fact that LA is 52-18 in their last 70 as a home favorite, if they are off a home game. Then there is a super stat on Greinke, who fits in an active situation tonight that has been off the charts at 52-3! GAME OF THE YEAR ON the LA DODGERS

The LA Angels open an important series vs the Cleveland Indians on the road tonight. The Angels are just a half game out for a wild card playoff entry, and with the calendar soon to turn to September, they need to get on a roll. Andrew Heaney has been a pleasant surprise for the Angels in the rotation, and owns a 5-2 mark backed by a solid 3.39 ERA. Heaney has allowed 2 runs or less in 9 of his 11 starts this season, and at 2-1 with a 2.13 ERA on the road, he has pitched well outside of Anaheim. The Angels bring a 5-1 record into this one when Heaney takes the mound vs a losing team. Indians have been brutal vs left handed pitching where they are 5-16 in their last 21 against them. The Tribe has also struggled vs strong pitching, logging a 3-9 mark vs a pitcher with a WHIP of less than 1.15. Make the play on LA in this one.

Don't look now, but the Texas Rangers would be in the playoffs if the season ended going into action today. The Rangers have overcome a lot of injuries, in particular to their starting rotation, but their outlook got brighter when they acquired Cole Hamels. Hamels however has had difficulty adjusting to the American League, and he is winless in 3 starts with the Rangers where he has carried the burden of a 5.23 ERA. Hamels has been victimized by the long ball in those 3 starts, allowing 5. Matt Boyd has been more effective as a starter than a reliever, and he should benefit from a Tiger attack that has been 39-18 in their last 57 vs a left handed starter. Tigers have been a winner 5 straight times after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous contest. Make the play on Detroit.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have pretty much sealed their fate, and are now 10 games back in the wild card race in the NL, and are running short on games. They have split the first 2 games of this series with Atlanta, a team that has been removed from the race for quite some time. It may appear that Arizona has the edge on the mound with Rubby De La Rosa who is 10-5 on the season, however he carries the baggage of a 4.55 ERA on the season. he has been the beneficiary of 6.14 runs per game in his starts, one of the top marks in baseball. Shelby Miller is just 5-9, but with a sterling 2.48 ERA. Miller has gotten the least support of any starter at 2.54 runs per game. there is a huge edge in this one on Atlanta, as the line simply does not reflect the results here, and I'll run with that value on the home dog. Andrew Cashner has often been a hard luck loser this season at 4-12, but the ERA doesn't really say 4-12, as it stands at 4.09 on the season. he may get the much needed support tonight at Coors Field where the Padres take on a rookie pitcher. Hernandez is 11-6 lifetime vs Boston, and owns a 25.5$ ROI against them, which is actually higher at Fenway. Wade Miley has not gone 7 consecutive starts without a win, and he has been a huge disappointment in Boston, and his 10 starts at Fenway have resulted in a 5.05 ERA, and his last win here came 2 months ago. A lot was expected from Joe Kelly, and he has disappointed, but he is off a win and strong outing his last trip to the bump. The Reds managed just a single run last night, and this is game 2 of a punishing 10 game road trip. San Diego used a 2 run HR by Justin Upton, the only runs they would need to win the opener. The Houston Astros have been a road disaster this season, and while they are 38-18 at home, they have struggled to a 23-31 mark on the road, despite their 5-4 win here last night. The A's started the season poorly, but have been much better since, especially when they have Sonny Gray on the mound. Gray owns an 11-4 record on the season pitching on a losing team, and has a WHIP of 0.98, and he has allowed 3 runs in 23 innings over his last 3 starts. Dallas Keuchel has been every bit as good as Gray, but the Astros have not only struggled miserably on the road, they are 2-9 in their last 11 roadies vs a right hander. A's have cashed 5 straight behind Gray as a dog, and certainly appears to be a live dog here. Make the play on Oakland.
