West Virginia

It hasn’t always been pretty so far this year, but West Virginia is undefeated and 3-0 heading into this key non-conference game at LSU. The Mountaineers will probably have to play their best game yet to win this one, but they are definitely capable.

Geno Smith is the signal caller for the offense, and he has done a solid job in his first year as the starting quarterback. Smith is completing 70% of his passes and has thrown only one interception so far this season. Noel Devine does a great job taking a lot of pressure off Smith. Devine is one of the quickest running backs in the nation, and he has rushed for over 100 yards in every game this year. Jock Sanders and Tavon Austin form a nice receiving duo on the outside.

The West Virginia defense has played well this year. The Mountaineers don’t have a single star that jumps out at you, but they do have a ton of quality athletes who know their role on this unit. The West Virginia team speed on defense will be tested by LSU, but the strength of the interior on this Mountaineer defense should make it tough for LSU to run up the middle.

LSU

The LSU Tigers have started the season at 3-0, but they haven’t faced any huge tests yet. Les Miles knows his team must get better if they going to contend in the SEC this year, and it all starts with improving their offense.

The LSU offense has sputtered quite a bit this year. The Tigers were actually out gained in both the North Carolina and Mississippi State games, but the defense has done a great job of forcing turnovers. Jordan Jefferson and the passing game have struggled mightily this season. In three games Jefferson only has a total of 344 passing yards. Steven Ridley has been the best weapon for the Tigers on offense, and he is averaging 106 yards rushing per game so far this year. The offense has a lot of room for improvement.

As weak as the offense has appeared so far this year, the defense has been extremely good. It all starts with Patrick Peterson, the play maker at the corner position. Peterson is also arguably the best kick returner in the country. The LSU defense is full of athletes that can move from side to side as well as anyone. It is next to impossible to run around the outside against this speedy defense. It will be an interesting matchup against the ultra quick Noel Devine of West Virginia.

West Virginia vs. LSU College Football Betting Trends

LSU is 4-11 ATS in their last 15 home games

West Virginia is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a road underdog

The under is 8-1 in LSU’s last 9 home games

West Virginia vs. LSU Free Pick:

The LSU Tigers have tremendous special teams and a great defense, but their offense just isn’t very good right now. West Virginia should be able to hold them down fairly nicely and I fully expect this to be a close game. I think the best bet on this game is the under. At 44 points I see a lot of value on the under!
