The Cardinals have won two straight games including last night's opener with the Reds, 7-6. The red birds have improved to 34-27 on the season. Michael Wacha has been very good for the Cards with a 7-1 record, 2.41 ERA and 1.098 WHIP. In fact, Wacha has allowed one run or less in five of his last six and and seven of his last nine (the other two games he allowed two runs). The Reds are now 20 games below .500 at 22-42. They will send Luis Castillo to the hill today with a 4-6 record, 5.64 ERA and 1.448 WHIP. Castillo has allowed eight runs over his last 9 2/3 innings or work. Big edge in starters here to the Cardinals with a very good Wacha on the hill. This is my top play for today on the Cardinals.

The A's finally seemed to snap out of their offensive funk on Thursday with a win over the Rays, 7-3. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak for Oakland. Frankie Montas makes just his second start of the season tonight. Montas is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA after allowing just one run in his first start. The Royals had Thursday off. KC is just 20-36 on the season. Struggling Ian Kennedy will take to the hill tonight. Kennedy is 1-5 in 11 starts with a 5.15 ERA and 1.543 WHIP. Kennedy has allowed 21 runs in his last four starts (20 2/3 innings). Both teams have struggled, but the A's have a pitcher I can get behind here. Play Oakland.

Washington improved to 29-22 with their win on Sunday over the Marlins, 5-2. The Nats don't have far to travel as they head to Baltimore to take on the Orioles. Washington will start Gio Gonzalez with his 5-2 record, 2.26 ERA and 1.258 WHIP. Gonzalez has pitched very well of late, allowing just three runs over his last three starts (18 innings). The Orioles are having a season to forget as they dropped to 17-36 with their loss on Sunday to Tampa Bay, 3-8. The O's send reeling Alex Cobb to the hill. Cobb is 1-6 with a lofty 7.32 ERA and 1.932 WHIP. Cobb pretty much reflects the season the O's are having - horrible! This rivalry will go to the much better Nationals. Play Washington.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have fallen on hard times. After a fast start to the season, the D'backs have lost seven straight games and now could fall back to .500 with a loss tonight. Part of the issue is an offense that has dropped to just 3.7 runs per games. It won't get any easier tonight against the Athletics in this IL matchup. Pat Corbin has been very good for Arizona with a 4-1 record and a 2.60 ERA. However, the D'backs have lost his last four starts. The A's send Sean Manaea to the hill. Manaea is 5-4 but has a very good 2.71 ERA and a excellent 0.859 WHIP. I like the A's a lot here tonight against a struggling Arizona team. Play Oakland.

Oakland goes for the four-game sweep today over the Toronto Blue Jays. The A's have won the first three of this series by a combined 18-10 margin. Daniel Mengden will start today. Mengden is 3-4 with a 3.76 ERA and 1.172 WHIP. Mengden has pitched very well of late, allowing just four earned runs overhis last 17 2/3 inings with just one BB and 13 KO's. Toronto has dropped below .500 with their three losses to 22-24. The Jays have now lost six of their last seven games. They will look to Joe Biagini today to get back on track. Biagini is 0-2 in his three starts with a 7.98 ERA and 1.840 WHIP. Not a good matchup here for the Jays who send a Biagini to the hill. Oakland playing with lots of confidence and I will take the A's.

The D-Backs have been ice cold lately, not only losing but also not scoring many runs. Losers of 6 of last 7 games, they are also rarely scoring more than 2 runs a game in this cold stretch. In today's day game, they will face Brandon Woodruff of the Brewers. There-in lies the biggest reason for this selection. Matt Koch goes for the DBacks aand has been solid. In his five starts, he has given up 3 runs just once. Compared to the stat line of Woodruff, this is a mismatch. the D Backs won yesterday behind Greinke and expect they will again today with Koch. The Pittsburgh Pirates have run up a modest four-game win streak after taking Friday's game from the Giants, 11-2. The Pirates have scored in bunches during this run, outscoring their opposition, 36-13. Chad Kuhl gets the nod today for the Bucs with a 4-2 record in his seven starts. Kuhl has a 4.12 ERA and 1.296 WHIP this season. Kuhl is also coming off an excellent start where he allowed no runs and one hit over seven innings to the Brewers. The Giants slide has now reached five games after being swept in Philadelphia and now losing at Pittsburgh. The Giants have been outscored 43-10 during this losing streak. Jeff Samardzija will try and turn things around for the Giants today. Samardzija is 1-2 with a 6.62 ERA and 1.811 WHIP. Doesn't look good for the Giants as Samardzija has not pitched well. Kevin Gausman is 2-2 this year with a 3.30 ERA and 1.145 WHIP. Gausman coming off an excellent start where he went 5 2/3 innings and allowed just one run. Tampa will counter with Jacob Faria, who is 3-1 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.212 WHIP. I'm taking the home team here. The A's and Mariners play a late game tonight. The A's are 15-15 on the season and the M's are 17-12. The A's are also 10-5 in their last 15 games. Sean Manaea gets the start today with his 4-2 record. The bigger news is that Manaea tossed a no-hitter two starts ago on April 21st vs the Red Sox. He followed that up with another excellent start, allowing no earned runs and four hits over seven innings to Houston. The M's will try and solve the puzzle that is Manaea. Wade Leblanc will make his first start of the season for the M's. This will be the 33-year old first start since August 2016. Leblanc was in the Pirates bullpen all of last season. Hard to pass on Manaea at just a 1.20 favorite here tonight. Leblanc is a big question, but we know what we get with the A's. Take Oakland.

The Atlanta Braves look to improve on their 12-8 record when they travel to Cincinnati to take on the Reds. The Reds have been in a horrible slump, posting a 3-17 record and losing four straight to the Cardinals. The Reds average just 3.0 rpg while allowing 5.4 rpg. The Braves have done well, averaging 5.6 rpg and allowing 3.9. The Braves took two of three from the Mets including Sunday's 4-3 win. The Reds have won just one of their last 13 games. The bullpen hasn't been good, allowing 4.76 ERA and 1.443 WHIP. At home the Reds pen has a 6.75 ERA and 1.714 WHIP. Luis Castillo starts for the Reds and is 1-2 in his four starts. Castillo has a 6.75 ERA and 1.279 WHIP. The Braves will start Brandon McCarthy, who is 3-0 in his four starts with a 2.91 ERA and 1.293 ERA. McCarthy has allowed just two earned runs over his last 10.1 innings. Laying a buck-thirty with the Braves seems like opening a present on Christmas day. They are averaging only 3.5 runs per game while allowing 4.6. Chase Anderson will toe the rubber for the Brew-Crew with a 0-1 record in his three starts. The Brewers are 2-1 in his starts. Anderson has a 3.38 ERA and a 1.125 WHIP. This one should be a very good pitcher's duel as both hurlers are off to a good start. The red-hot Texas Rangers have scored 42 runs during their season-high seven-game winning streak. Starter Rangers RH Andrew Cashner (2.43 ERA) has done well facing Philadelphia, posting a 3-1 career mark with a 2.55 ERA in 12 appearances (six starts). Reason: Baltimore has a winning road record and Orioles righty Dylan Bundy (5-1, 2.17 ERA) has been sharp all season. Baltimore is #12 in baseball in home runs, and faces a KC team that is last in runs scored and slugging. The Orioles are 20-6 against the American League Central. Kansas City can't hit as a team, with no offensive punch. Royals OF Alex Gordon 1-for-26 over his past eight games. The Royals are on a 6-14 run, including 5-11 vs. a right-handed starter. Ace Dallas Keuchel (3-0, 0.96 ERA) has been dominant this season by allowing just one run in each of his last three outings while logging seven innings in all four. Keuchel fanned seven batters for the second straight outing on Wednesday in a 5-1 rout of the Los Angeles Angels. The Astros are 10-1 vs. a right-handed starter and 20-6 when Keuchel starts with 5 days of rest. The Giants are 11-28 in their last 39 games following a win. Kansas City is home and has won 4 of 5. Royals lefty Jason Vargas (2-0, 0.66 ERA) breezed to wins in his first two starts while yielding a total of one run in 13 2/3 innings. 08/18 10:05 PM EST MLB (971) SEATTLE MARINERS VS (972) LOS ANGELES ANGELS. Take: (971) AL West Game of the Month: Seattle. Seattle has a long hill to climb to win the AL WEST, trailing Texas by 6.5 games. However, the Mariners are still in the thick of the Wild, just two games back of a spot. Seattle rebounded from Tuesday's loss to the Angels with a win on Wednesday, 4-3. Seattle has been hot, winning 12 of their last 15 games. Red-hot Hisashi Iwakuma will start tonight, 14-7 with a 3.84 ERA. In addition, the Japanese native has allowed just three runs over his last 19.2 innings and has won eight of his last 10 starts. The Mariners are 15-6 in Iwakuma's last 21 road starts. The Angels are in dead last in the division and have won have lost 11 of their last 12 games. Matt Shoemaker has struggled this season, posting a 6-13 record with a 4.22 ERA. Shoemaker is coming off a rough outing at Cleveland, where he allowed 12 hits and five runs over just six innings. The M's have won 15 of Iwakuma's last 21 road starts. In addition, they have won four of the last six games in this series. I fully expect Iwakuma to dominate this struggling Angels lineup tonight. And the Angels are 17-35 in their last 52 games vs. a right-handed starter. Play Seattle.

Yordano Ventura is coming off back-to-back wins and allowed three runs or fewer in seven straight starts. Ventura is 6-0 with a 3.18 ERA in nine career games against the Tigers and the Royals are 20-9 in Ventura's last 29 starts vs. American League Central. The Tigers (2-7 run) are having serious trouble getting the bats working, and the slump has dropped them six games behind the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central and 3 1/2 games back of the Boston Red Sox in the race for the second AL wild card. Tigers righty Anibal Sanchez (6-12, 6.31 ERA) is having a terrible season and went 1-2 with a 6.20 ERA in four starts against the Royals in 2015. And the Tigers are 5-16 in Sanchez's last 21 starts. Reason: Colorado has one of the best offenses in baseball, Philadelphia has one of the worst. Jake Thompson (12.46 ERA) goes for the home team, tagged for six runs on seven hits over 4+ innings in a loss at San Diego. The Phillies are 7-22 following a win. Colorado rookie left fielder David Dahl tied a major-league record (Chuck Aleno, 1941) by hitting safely in 17 straight games to open his career. Dahl owns the second-longest active hitting streak in the majors, behind teammate Carlos Gonzalez, who extended his to 18 games by delivering a tiebreaking pinch-hit, three-run double in Thursday's victory. 08/03 04:10 PM MLB (919) CHICAGO WHITE SOX VS (920) DETROIT TIGERS. Take: (920) DETROIT TIGERS Reason: Division Dominator of the Year: Tigers. Chris Sale's last scheduled start against the Detroit Tigers was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Sale was scratched and eventually suspended for destroying the team's throwback jerseys. Pitchers are creatures of habit, so getting out his routine was not a good idea, especially against this talented Tigers' team. Sale is off a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs, giving up two runs on six hits. Detroit has scored at least 10 runs in three of its last four games and 12 times this season, second to Boston (13) in the American League. Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (9-2, 2.50 ERA) has been outstanding and the White Sox are 9-24 in their last 33 road games. Play Detroit.

The Rays are 50-24 at home against a team with a road winning percentage of less than .400. Rays starter Matt Andriese (6-2, 2.75 ERA) is 5-1 with a 2.92 ERA in eight starts and 1-1 with a 2.38 mark over 10 relief appearances this season. 7/29 05:10 PM MLB (957) PITTSBURGH PIRATES VS (958) MILWAUKEE BREWERS. Take: (958) MILWAUKEE BREWERS Reason: NL Central Game of the Year: Milwaukee. The Pirates are in a tough division, trailing the Cubs by 8.5 and the Cardinals by 6.5 games. Right now, the club's best shot looks to be a Wild Card slot, where they are just two back at the moment. Steven Brault makes just his second start for the Bucs. Brault was brought up from AAA Indianapolis. The lefty allowed two runs and four hits with five KO's over four innings in his first start. Brault's pitch count was high though, 82 over the four innings. The Brewers have won three of their last four games. They hit the ball very well, scoring 23 runs over their four game set with the Diamondbacks. Juinor Guerra has been a pleasant surprise for the Brewers, posting a very nice 6-2 record with a 2.85 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Guerra has 10 quality starts in a row, not allowing over three earned runs in another of those games. Guerra has pitched so well, that other club's have noticed and now he's rumored to be on the trading block. The Brewers have hit lefties well, especially at home where they are 15-5 in their last 20. I like the Brewers here with a pitcher that has been great and can showcase himself even more tonight for a move to a contender. Play Milwaukee.

The Orioles are stuck with Ubaldo Jimenez (5-9, 7.38 ERA) and the Orioles are 1-7 in Jimenez's last 8 road starts. Baltimore has a losing record and the Twins are 5-1 in their last 6 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. A battle of last place clubs here as the Rays and A's battle in the Bay. Tampa Bay has won two straight games and three of four, but still are way out of the AL East race at 17 back of the Red Sox. The Rays liked the high altitude of Colorado, as they scored 25 runs over three games in Denver. Matt Moore starts today with a 5-7 record and 4.33 ERA. Moore has been very good of late, allowing just six earned runs over his last four starts (27 innings). Moore's recent strong outings makes him a good candidate to be on the trading block come deadline time. The Oakland A's are in last in the AL West, 13 back of the Rangers. The A's have won four of six since the break, but were shutout last night by the Astros, 7-0. Sonny Gray has had a rough year. The 26-year old righthander would likely be the ace of this staff. However, with some injury problems, Gray is just 4-8 on the season with a 5.12 ERA. Despite some recent quality starts, Gray has just one win in his last ten starts. In addition, the A's are just 2-11 in Gray's last 13 starts on grass. If this was the Sonny Gray of last season, laying this price would be good value. But this year's edition of Gray is not nearly the same pitcher. And, with the Rays playing well and Moore pitching his best ball of the season, the dog is just too much to pass on here. The Tigers are one of three teams bunched together in the AL Central that are trying to catch the Cleveland Indians for first place. The Tigers trail the Indians by 6.5 game and are currently in 2nd place. It's still a bit early to think Wild Card, but the Tigers are three games back of the Red Sox right now for a While card spot. The Tigers got a walk-off two run home run from Jarrod Saltalamacchia on Sunday to lift Detroit to a win over the Royals, 4-2. The Tigers took two of three from the Royals to open the 2nd half of the season. Tonight, Matt Boyd will start the series against Minnesota. Boyd has been a spot starter for Detroit, starting six games this season with a 5.77 ERA and a 0-2 mark. He is coming off a good effort, allowing just one run over five innings at Toronto on July 9th. The Twins are already looking to next season, as they sit 21 games back and in last place. The Twins are already shopping right handed pitcher Ervin Santana around before the trade deadline. Ricky Nolasco starts today with a 4-7 record and 5.22 ERA. Nolasco has put in lots of innings this year for the Twins, but not many chances to win. With Boyd pitching tonight we get a pretty decent price at home with the Tigers. Boyd's last start showed lots of promise and I like this spot and price to take a much better team at home. Play Detroit

This month he has recorded just one quality start and has failed to complete six innings in any of his last three starts. The 29-year-old has allowed at least one home run in each of his last 10 starts, bringing his ERA to an inflated 5.32. He faces a Cleveland offense that is ninth in baseball in runs scored. Yankees starter Ivan Nova (5-5, 5.32 ERA) has struggled and has failed to go beyond the fifth in his last three turns, giving up 15 runs in 14 innings during that stretch. He owns a 6.98 ERA and 1.55 WHIP on the road this year. The Yankees are 4-11 in their last 15 road games vs. a left-handed starter. San Diego has a decent arm going in Drew Pomeranz (2.76 ERA). Pomeranz (7-7) threw seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits, one walk while striking out six in a 3-0 victory over the Reds on Saturday. He has a .190 batting average against, 2.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 88 innings. However, they still find themselves in the thick of things in the AL Central, just 2.5 back of the Indians and two back of the Royals. These clubs have split the firsts two games of their four-game series. The Royals took the opener, 104, and the Tigers took yesterday's contest, 10-3. Matt Boyd starts for the Tigers. Boyd has just five appearances this season and four starts. In addition, he's coming off a terrible start, allowing six runs over 4.1 innings to the White Sox. Boyd's ERA has gone up in every appearance thus far. The Royals will counter with veteran Edinson Volquez. Volquez is 6-6 this season with a 3.90 ERA. The 32-year old righthander is coming off his best start of the season, allowing no runs and just two hits over seven innings to the Indians. The Tigers are 0-7 in Boyd's last seven road starts dating back to last season. Meanwhile, the Royals boast a 20-6 record in Volquez's last 26 home starts. Big edge here on the mound to the Royals. 5/31 07:10 PM EST MLB (903) PITTSBURGH PIRATES VS (904) MIAMI MARLINS Take: (904) Revenge Game of the Year: Play Miami. Fifth straight road game for Pittsburgh, looking road weary over the weekend, scoring a pair of runs in two losses at Texas. They got a victory yesterday pounding the Marlins, 10-0, so the home team has a chip on its shoulder after getting embarrassed. Marlins' CF Marcell Ozuna had his 11-game hitting streak and 36-game on-base streak snapped with an 0-for-3 night. Miami ace Jose Fernandez (7-2, 2.82 ERA) is rolling. Fernandez pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on six hits while walking one and striking 12 batters in Thursday's win against the Rays. Fernandez has been lights-out this month, winning all five of his starts while allowing more than one run in just one of those outings. He's sporting a dynamite 90-15 strikeout to walk ratio. Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton is expected to return Tuesday, and the Marlins are 25-2 in Fernandez's last 27 home starts. Play Miami.

4/13 05:10 PM MLB (927) CHICAGO WHITE SOX VS (928) MINNESOTA TWINS. Take: (927) CHICAGO WHITE SOX Reason: MLB High Roller Platinum Club: Chicago. Minnesota is off to the franchise's worst start in 112 years and the Twins attempt to end the 0-7 start when they host the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. The Twins have been outscored 30-13 over the first seven games in what is the worst opening stretch since they started 0-13 as the Washington Senators in 1904. Minnesota's offensive production has been horrid so far and the squad is just 5-for-55 with runners in scoring position. They face a strong White Sox lefty in Carlos Rodon (0-1, 2.57 ERA) and the White Sox are 9-3 in their last 12 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. Play Chicago.

9/16 07:05 PM EST MLB (953) CHICAGO CUBS VS (954) PITTSBURGH PIRATES Take: (953) TV Game of the Year: Cubs. Chicago has the season series edge over the Pirates and has been on a roll the last two months. The Cubs impressive rookie class has combined for a club-record 61 home runs. Ace Jake Arrieta (19-6, 1.99 ERA) goes here and the Cubs are 14-2 in Arrieta's last 16 road starts. Arrieta has won each of his last eight starts and has only given up more than one run in one of those starts. In his recent streak, which has improved his season ERA to 1.99, he has struck out 57 and given up just 29 hits, 12 walks, and three earned runs in 58.1 innings. The Cubs are 25-8 in their last 33 games vs. a right-handed starter and face 38-year old A.J. Burnett, who has lost three in a row getting beat 6-4, 15-5 and 9-3. The Pirates were extremely careful with Burnett here as that pitch count was his lowest of the season. It's clear they want to ease him back in and get Burnett into the form he had at the beginning of the season before ramping him up for the stretch run and playoffs. The Cubs are 4-1 in Arrieta's last 5 starts vs. Pirates. Play Chicago!

09/08 10:10 PM EST MLB (977) TEXAS RANGERS VS (978) SEATTLE MARINERS Take: (977) AL West Game of the Month: Texas. The Texas Rangers have plenty to play for, a great team on the road in pursuit of an American League playoff berth. Texas holds a slight lead over Minnesota for the second wild-card spot and trails first-place Houston by three games in the AL West. The Rangers have recorded a major league-high in road wins, and are 8-1 against a team with a losing record. Cole Hamels (3.70 ERA) is settling in with the Rangers 4-0 his last four starts. Hamels struck out eight batters and gave up three runs over seven innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Padres. After getting off to a rough start to his stint with the Rangers, Hamels has seemingly begun to settle in of late, generating eight or more strikeouts in three of his last four outings. While Texas is a Top 10 offense, Seattle is 23rd in runs scored, 21st in on base percentage and the Mariners are 1-5 in their last 6 home games vs. a left-handed starter. Play Texas!

The White Sox are 17-35 on the road against a left-handed starter and face souithpaw Tommy Milone (6-4, 3.86 ERA).
