Utah State Aggies vs. BYU Cougars Betting Odds from JustBet

College Football Betting Spread: BYU -7.5 (-110) Utah State +7.5 (-110)

Moneyline: BYU (-280) Utah State (+240)

Total: 50

For a second straight week, BYU will host the nationally televised Friday night matchup on ESPN. This week they will take on their intra-state rival, the Utah State Aggies. The Aggies ended BYU’s ten game winning streak against them with a 31-16 win last year. Will BYU get the best of them again in this one, or will Utah State make it two straight?

Utah State

Utah State famously started this season with a heartbreaking loss against Auburn. Quite honestly, Utah State had the game won, but they lost after allowing Auburn to score twice in less than two minutes thanks to an onside kick recovery. As if that wasn’t enough heartbreak, they fell in double overtime 35-34 against Colorado State last weekend. The Aggies lost after they tried to go for two and failed. How will the team respond?

Chuckie Keeton is the freshman quarterback for Utah State. Keeton has done a very good job managing the offense so far this year. He has yet to throw an interception, and he understands the offense well. Robert Turbin is the primary runner for the Aggies, and he averages 5.7 yards per carry. Utah State actually ranks fifth in the nation in rushing yards per game, but they are 104th out of 120 teams in passing. The Utah State defense is 12th in the nation in total defense, and they are particularly strong against the run.

BYU

BYU played a very poor first half last week against UCF, but the Cougars rebounded in the second half to pick up a win and even their record at 2-2. Bronco Mendenhall’s team has been a bit of a disappointment so far this year, but they still have plenty of time to get things going in the right direction.

Jake Heaps has struggled mightily at the quarterback spot in 2011. Heaps has thrown three touchdowns and five interceptions. He has completed just 55% of his passes. J.J. Di Liugi and Bryan Kariya share time in the backfield, but neither of them have been very effective running the ball. At this point, BYU doesn’t have much of an identity on offense. The BYU defense played a terrible second half against Utah, but overall they have been solid this year. They have only allowed 13, 17, and 17 points in their other three games this year.

Utah State vs. BYU Free Pick: Under 50

Utah State’s defense is better than most people realize. The strength of the BYU team is definitely its defense. I don’t expect either offense to get into much of a rhythm in this game. I like the under here.
