UConn

The Connecticut Huskies started the season slowly, but they appear to have gotten back on the right track in the last couple games. This is a chance for them to impress a national television audience.

The UConn offense looks a little different now, since Head Coach Randy Edsall made Cody Endres the starting quarterback. Endres took over for Zach Frazer, who was struggling to consistently move the offense. Endres has provided a nice spark for the unit. Endres is a more prolific passer and he is completing 68% of his passes. Jordan Todman is still the main man for this offense. Todman is a great running back, and he already has 638 yards rushing in just four games. The Huskies are averaging 209 yards on the ground per game, but the addition of Endres allows them to open it up and pass when necessary.

The UConn defensive front is huge, but they haven’t done a very good job stopping the run so far this year. They are allowing 162 yards on the ground per game. This defensive unit has had trouble getting off the field on third down. Opponents are converting 40% on third down attempts so far this year. The secondary has done a pretty good job in coverage, but they haven’t been tested by any great passers just yet. This is a defense that should improve as the year goes along.

Rutgers

A couple years ago Rutgers was a program on the rise, but now they are heading the wrong direction. Greg Schiano’s team lost at home against the Tulane Green Wave last week in what was an embarrassing game all the way around for Rutgers. They need this Friday night spotlight game on ESPN to get the program going in the right direction again.

The Rutgers offense has been downright terrible this year. The quarterback situation is unclear for Friday since Tom Savage is banged up right now, but they really don’t have a good option at this spot. This is an offense that is averaging only 153 passing yards per game. Despite playing some very weak defenses, Rutgers has scored only 19 points per game. There really isn’t a bright spot on this offense to this point. If Rutgers is going to make anything out of this season, they must improve drastically on offense.

The Rutgers defense has played very well this season. This defensive unit ranks fourth in the nation in points allowed at just 12 per game. The strength of this defense is up front, where they have been doing a great job stuffing the run. The defensive line and the linebackers do a great job getting to the football quickly. This strength will be tested this week by a Connecticut Huskies team that runs the football as well as anyone in the Big East.

UConn vs. Rutgers Free College Football Pick:

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have looked terrible in the last couple weeks. UConn is playing much better football lately and this is an offense that will score points. Rutgers has a decent defense, but I think their statistics look great because of their low quality of competition. I expect UConn to run the ball effectively and sprinkle in some nice passing plays. UConn is 15-4 ATS in their last 19 games overall. I’m picking UConn -5 in this Friday night game!
