Pittsburgh Panthers (0-0) vs. Utah Utes (0-0) Betting Lines from SportsInteraction

MoneyLine: Utah (-140) vs. Pittsburgh (+120)

College Football Betting Spread: Utah -2.5

Over/Under: 49

Pittsburgh:

Bill Stull is gone, but the Panthers still have plenty of firepower on offense. Dion Lewis is a tremendous running back who took the nation by storm last year as a freshman. Lewis is a legitimate Heisman hopeful in 2010. Tino Sunseri will be the new quarterback, and while he is lacking in experience, most around the program believe he has a good grasp of the offense. The wide receivers are young, but extremely talented.

The Pittsburgh defense led the nation in sacks a year ago with 47, and they should be able to put plenty of heat on the quarterback once again this year. Greg Romeus and Jabaal Sheard are both quick around the outside and this Panthers defense will be a tough matchup for all the offensive line units they face. The run defense could be hurt by the loss of a couple big men in the middle, but overall this Pittsburgh defense should be solid again in 2010.

Utah:

This will be the Utes last year in the Mountain West, and I fully expect them to have a very solid squad. Jordan Wynn started the final five games of last season and really showed some impressive tools at the quarterback spot. Wynn is a solid passer and a mobile runner in the backfield as well. The Utes have Eddie Wide and a terrific offensive line as well, so expect Utah to be able to run the football consistently this year against just about everyone they play.

The defense was the weak link last year, but they appear to be at least somewhat improved in 2010. The defensive line is deep and they should hold their own against most offensive fronts. The biggest question mark will come at the linebacker unit, where virtually no one has any experience. The cornerbacks should be good, but the safeties will be new and untested. The Utes defense will be solid, but I wouldn’t count on anything spectacular from this group.

College Football Betting Trends:

Utah is 27-12-1 ATS in their last 40 non-conference games

Pittsburgh is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall

The under is 4-1-1 in Utah’s last 6 games overall

The under is 4-1 in Pittsburgh’s last 5 games overall

Pittsburgh vs. Utah College Football Prediction:

The Panthers are a solid team and I think they have the potential to do quite a bit of damage this year, but I just don’t know if this team can go into a hostile environment and win with a new starting quarterback. I fully expect both teams to be able to run the ball well in this one, but I think Utah has the better quarterback and a big home field advantage. I think Utah -2.5 is a solid play here.
