Kansas

The Jayhawks are an interesting team right now. They started off the season with a stunning loss at home to North Dakota State, but then followed that up with a surprising win over Georgia Tech.

Turner Gill is in his first as Kansas head coach, and there is no doubt he has his work cut out for him. Todd Reesing and Dezmon Briscoe are gone from the aeria attack, as well as Jake Sharp from the running game. Jordan Webb is the starting quarterback now, and he is a very inexperienced freshman. The primary running back is James Sims, who is also a freshman. Bradley McDougald, a freshman,  and Daymond Patterson, a sophomore,  are the top two receivers. Clearly, this offense is about as young and inexperienced as you’ll ever find.

The defense has been the weakness of the team, but I believe they will improve this year. Jake Laptad is a star at the defensive end position and the defensive tackles are solid as well. The linebackers are solid, but the loss of Huldon Tharp to injury hurt quite a bit. The secondary is the weakness in this unit, but the coaches are planning to bring a lot of heat on opposing quarterbacks with their front seven to reduce the pressure on the secondary.

Southern Mississippi

Southern Mississippi was humbled in a big way in their season opener at South Carolina. The team went into that one believing they could win, but they were blown out 41-13. After a win over Prarie View last weekend, they get a chance to show improvement at home on ESPN tonight.

The Golden Eagles have struggled badly with injuries in the past few years, and I truly believe that this offense could be special if they stay healthy this year. The star on this team is DeAndre Brown. Brown is as gifted as any receiver you’ll see all year, and his amazing height gives him a huge advantage over defenders. The coaching staff and quarterback Austin Davis must find a way to get him the ball often. It is a bit of running back by committee system here, and they’ll need to keep defenses honest for this offense to be balanced in 2010.

The Southern Mississippi defense has the talent to be the best inside Conference USA. This unit has a ton of speed, especially in the front seven. Against the run, I expect this team to be very good this year. The secondary is definitely weaker, so they could struggle against teams who can air it out in a big way. This defense has something to prove after getting lit up by South Carolina in the opener.

College Football Betting Trends

Kansas is 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall

Southern Mississippi is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 September games

The over is 4-1 in Kansas’ last 5 games overall

The over is 4-1 in Southern Mississippi’s last 5 games overall

Kansas vs. Southern Mississippi College Football Pick:

I know the trends say the over may be a nice play, but I think the under has some nice value at 53 points. The Jayhawks inexperienced offense hits the road for the first time, where I suspect they will struggle. Southern Mississippi will likely have some trouble with the Kansas pass rush. In the end I think it will be a solid game, but the under is the best play here.
