The Western Athletic Conference gets a rare chance to shine in the national television spotlight this Friday evening. Hawaii will travel to the mainland to take on the San Jose State Spartans. The Rainbow Warriors are 3-2, while the Spartans enter this game at 2-4. This is a wide open conference now that Boise State has moved on to the Mountain West, so this game is certainly an important game in the league race.
Hawaii
Bryant Moniz is the senior starting quarterback for Hawaii. Moniz may not be well-known by most in college football, but he is an excellent quarterback. Moniz has already thrown 15 touchdowns and just one interception in the team’s first five games. He is completing 65% of his passes. Hawaii doesn’t have the weapons on the outside that they had last year, but Royce Pollard is a quality wide receiver who can do some damage. The Rainbow Warriors rank eighth in the nation in passing offense, but they are 110th in rushing offense.
Hawaii’s defense hasn’t done a good job getting off the field this year. The Rainbow Warriors are allowing 27.4 points per game despite giving up just 327 yards per contest. The front seven has been very good against the run so far this year, but the secondary has struggled in pass coverage.

San Jose State
The San Jose State Spartans are slowly turning their football program around. The last couple years have been very rough for this team. Matt Faulkner isn’t a star at the quarterback spot, but he knows the system well and he gives his team a chance to win. Brandon Rutley is the team’s best play maker in the backfield. Rutley is averaging 5.7 yards per carry, and he already has six touchdown runs this year. Rutley is listed as questionable for this game, and if he doesn’t play it will certainly hurt San Jose State’s chances of winning.
The Spartans defense was atrocious last year, but they are slightly better this season. The secondary hasn’t been tested by a great passing offense the last few weeks, but that will change in this one. San Jose State typically struggles against teams who run the ball well, but Hawaii doesn’t try to run very often.
Hawaii vs. San Jose St Free Pick: Over 55.5
The Spartans allowed 57 points against Stanford in their one game against a team with a good passing game. Hawaii should be able to move the ball at will through the air in this one. San Jose State’s offense is typically better at home, and I think they’ll put up some points against a mediocre Hawaii defense. The over is 6-2 in Hawaii’s last 8 games overall. Take the over in this one.
