California

The Golden Bears are off to a great start to the year at 2-0, but this will definitely be their toughest test yet. Reno will be pumped up for this ESPN showcase game, and the Golden Bears know they’ll be in for battle.

The California Golden Bears offense is full of talent all over the field. Shane Vereen is a budding star who will be playing on Sunday in the next couple of years. Vereen has tremendous speed, and his elusive running style will frustrate defenses every game this year. Kevin Riley has definitely improved as a quarterback in a big way over the last year or so. In 2010 thus far, Riley has thrown seven touchdown passes without committed a single turnover. The wide receivers are not as amazing as some years, but they are still solid. The offensive front of the Golden Bears will likely be the key to this team’s success in 2010. Riley was sacked 31 times in 2009 so they need to improve their pass blocking.

Clancy Pendergast is the new man on the scene as the defensive coordinator at Cal. This defense has allowed just 10 points in their first two games, but both of those games were against poor offenses. This will be a whole different story against the top running attack in the nation. Mike Mohammed is the leader of the defense and he is a sure tackler who gets around the field at an impressive pace. In the past couple years it has been the pass defense that lets down California. Last year they ranked 11th in pass defense in the nation.

Nevada:

The Wolf Pack haven’t been able to grab a big national spotlight win in a long time, and they know this is a great chance for them. Expect them to be absolutely fired up on Friday night.

The offense revolves around sensational quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick is one of the best running quarterbacks we have seen in college in many years, and he also makes good decisions when asked to throw the football. This rushing attack was first in the country in rushing offense by more than 50 yards per game in 2009, so they definitely know how to run the football. Brandon Wimbley adds another great dimension to this offense on the outisde. Wimbley is just a sophomore, but he is a sensation talent at the wide receiver position. The unique offense that Chris Ault and this Nevada team run is extremely difficult to stop, especially since they have an impressive offensive front full of veterans.

As good as the Nevada offense has been, the defense has really held them back in the last two years. The Wolf Pack are solid when it comes to stopping the run, but stopping the pass is a whole different story. Nevada allowed just shy of 300 yards per game through the air last year, and I fully expect that to be a big problem again this year. Dontay Mach is a great defensive end and they’ll count on him to get to the quarterback early and often to try to take pressure off their weak secondary. They’ll need to key in and stop Vereen first this week, but Nevada can’t allow Riley to sit in the pocket without pressure or they’ll get burned in a big way.

Cal vs. Nevada College Football Betting Trends:

California is 6-13 ATS in their last 19 road games

Nevada is 26-12 ATS in their last 38 home games

Nevada is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 September games

Cal vs. Nevada College Football Pick:

The offenses are dominate on both sides in this one, and I think that will show throughout this game. The over is all the way up to 65.5 points right now, but I still think that is the best play here. Expect Nevada to play inspired football and Cal to air it out for some big yardage here.

California vs. Nevada Score Prediction: California 38 Nevada 35
