MoneyLine: BYU (-190) Utah State (+160)

College Football Betting Spread: BYU -4 (-110) Utah State +4 (-110)

Over/Under: 51.5

BYU

The BYU Cougars haven’t lost four straight games in the last 17 years, but they must win this game or they will lose four straight in 2010.

The BYU offense has been downright terrible. Freshman Jake Heaps is now the starter at quarterback, and he has been inconsistent as one could expect from a freshman. J.J. Di Luigi is averaging 6.3 yards per carry and he is also the top receiver on the team right now. A large part of the problem for the Cougars is that they seem to never be able to get the ball down the field, and defenses are sitting on the run or the short passing game. The Cougars offense averages just 15 points per game, which is 116th in the nation.

The BYU defense is solid against the pass, but against the run they have been terrible. Opponents are gaining 263.5 yards per game on the ground against BYU so far this year. The defensive line is being pushed around in a big way right now. Utah State doesn’t run the ball very well at all, so this might give the BYU defense a chance to step up in this Friday night ESPN showcase game.

Utah State

The Aggies of Utah State opened the season by nearly shocking the Oklahoma Sooners, but since then they have played very poorly. Utah State sits at 1-3 and they badly need a win in front of their home crowd in Logan.

The Aggies offense is led by a star at the quarterback position in Diondre Borel. Borel actually has had a bit of a slow start this year, but he has proven he is one of the best talents in the WAC. Borel can scramble, but he prefers to air it out with his strong arm. The receivers are talented, but the offensive line has had a hard time keeping defenses out of the backfield this year. The running game is virtually non-existent for Utah State. They’ll need a big game from Borel to win this one.

The Utah State defense has improved over the last few years, but the secondary is major weakness. Last week they allowed 364 yards through the air against San Diego State. Fortunately for the Aggies, BYU has been unable to air it out much at all this year. The linebackers on this defense are solid and they do a good job tackling in the open field.

BYU vs. Utah College Football Betting Trends

The under is 4-0 in BYU’s 4 games this year

BYU vs. Utah State Free College Football Pick:

The players from both sides will be pumped up for this matchup. Both teams know they need a win and it is on national television, so it’s a chance to make a statement. BYU is a team that just doesn’t have the firepower they have had in past years. I think this will be a close game all the way through, and my free pick  on this game is the under. I like under 51.5.
