Over/Under: 37.5

Cincinnati

The Bengals opened up the season with an ugly loss to the Patriots, but bounced back nicely with a win over the Ravens last weekend. Which Bengals team will show up this weekend?

The Cincinnati offense was supposed to be more high powered this year as the Bengals picked up Terrell Owens and Jermaine Gresham to be two great targets for Carson Palmer. Cedric Benson and the running game were terrific all of last season, but the Bengals need to get him going again this year. The biggest question could be whether Carson Palmer can get back to being the franchise quarterback he was a few years ago. Ocho Cinco, Owens, and Gresham give him plenty of weapons to work with, but the Bengals need a more consistent effort from Palmer to be great.

The Bengals defense was terrible in week one and terrific in week two. After allowing 38 points to the Patriots, they allowed just 10 points to Baltimore and picked off Joe Flacco four times. The Bengals have a great pair of cornerbacks in Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall. At the linebacker position, Dhani Jones has stepped up as a real leader for this unit. The Bengals defense ranked in the top five in the NFL all last year. Can they do it again? Some are skeptical, but Mike Zimmer is a great defensive coordinator.

Carolina

The Panthers have started the season 0-2 and John Fox has decided it is time to make a change at the quarterback position. Matt Moore is now the backup and Jimmy Clausen will start in this one.

The Panthers offense has two very good running backs in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, but they must soften up the defense a bit with the passing game. So far this year they have been unable to do that, but that is why they are trying out Clausen. Steve Smith is still a great play maker at wide receiver, but the rest of the wide receiver unit is a bit of a question mark. The Panthers need efficient play from Clausen in order to be successful.

The Carolina defense was once one of the best in the league, but many of those stars are now gone. Carolina still has some very good players, but they are a little dinged up right now. The star of their linebacking unit, Thomas Davis, is out for this game. Chris Gamble is the best cornerback on the team, but he is questionable for this weekend’s game as well. Carolina will be counting on their pass rush to get to the quarterback this year and take some pressure off their secondary.

Bengals vs. Panthers NFL Betting Trends

The Bengals are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games

The Panthers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 September games

The over is 4-1 in the Bengals last 5 road games

The under is 7-2 in the Panthers last 9 games overall

Bengals vs. Panthers Free Pick:

The Bengals offense is better than they have shown so far this season and I expect them to put up some points in this one. The Panthers should be able to run the ball pretty well against the Bengals. Since the line has moved down to just 37.5, I think the over is the play here. A special teams or defensive touchdown is very possible with these two teams as well which makes the over an even better value.
