Arizona

The Arizona Cardinals haven’t exactly been impressive this year, but they are 2-1. The Cardinals will face a tougher test this weekend in San Diego.

Derek Anderson and this Arizona offense have been very inconsistent so far this year. Anderson has had some problems with turnovers and the running game has struggled without a healthy Beanie Wells. Wells appears to be healthy and ready to go in this one, and Arizona will need a big game from him. A huge problem for Arizona has been having drives stall out in the red zone. Arizona is ranked just 25th in the NFL points scored per game at 16.

The defense of the Cardinals doesn’t look good from a numbers perspective, but they have continued to be an opportunistic bunch. The team is second to last in the NFL in stopping the run, and they are allowing 26 points per game to be scored on them. At some point this defense must step up and get some three and outs to keep their team in the ball game.

San Diego

The Chargers are basically the opposite of the Cardinals, they look good in the statistical categories, but they are just 1-2 on the year. They need to turn it around on Sunday.

Phillip Rivers is putting up some huge yardage through three games, but his quarterback rating is down from last year because of some interceptions. The Chargers offense is missing Vincent Jackson quite a bit, and Ryan Matthews missed last weekend as well. Jackson will still be out this week, but Matthews is expected to be back. Look for the Chargers to try to establish the running game to open up the middle for Antonio Gates in this one.

The Chargers defense ranks fourth in the NFL in total yards allowed, but they rank 19th in points allowed per game. The defense badly missed Shawne Merriman, who will probably miss this game with an injury once again. The secondary is terrific with Jammer, Cason, and Weddle. San Diego has to do a better job of limiting opponents to field goals once they get into the red zone.

Arizona vs. San Diego Free NFL Pick:

The Chargers offense is much better at home, and both of these teams have been turnover prone. I think the total, which is set at 46, is too low. The free NFL pick in this one is on the over!
