Let’s take a quick look at the 2011 Outback Bowl. It is Urban Meyer’s last game coaching at Florida and they will take on Penn State and Joe Paterno. This is a very interesting matchup.

College Football Betting Spread: Florida -7 (-105) Penn State +7 (-105)

Over/Under: 48

Penn State

Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions have slipped a little this year, but the team has improved as the season has moved along. Matt McGloin has been a nice spark for the offense over the second half of the year. The Nittany Lions haven’t been able to run the ball as well as expected, which has hurt their chances in several close games this year.

The Penn State offense is averaging just 24.6 points per game this year. The rushing attack is ranked 76th in the country and the passing game is ranked 52nd in the nation. Silas Redd is a talented freshman runner that will probably see some action on Saturday, and he has the ability to break a long run. If Penn State is going to be successful on offense, the offensive line must play a strong game.

The Nittany Lions defense has taken a step back this year as well. The defensive line has been getting pushed off the ball quite a bit this year. Penn State is allowing 160 yards per game on the ground. The secondary is strong, but the lack of a pass rush can make life difficult on them at times.

Florida

The Gators had a disappointing season and now they are losing their head coach. Urban Meyer says he is leaving after this game to retire from coaching, at least for now. No doubt Florida will want to send him out a winner!

The Florida offense has been surprisingly bad this year. John Brantley just never got it going, and the running game has been inconsistent at best. Jeff Demps has amazing speed and he can take it the distance, but he isn’t an every down type of running back. Trey Burton and Chris Rainey will likely see quite a bit of time on Saturday as well. The Gators are 84th in the nation in pass offense, and 39th in the nation in rushing offense.

The Florida defense has been solid this year. The Gators are ranked seventh nationally in total defense, and they are allowing just 21 points per game on the season. They don’t have the run stuffers they have had in the past, but this is an athletic defense that should be ready for this big matchup.

Outback Bowl: Penn State vs. Florida Betting Trends

Florida is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 bowl games

Penn State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games at a neutral site

The under is 6-2 in Penn State’s last 8 bowl games

The over is 4-1 in Florida’s last 5 bowl games

Penn State vs. Florida Free Pick:

The players on both teams should be geared up for this game. I expect the best effort from both squads on Saturday afternoon. I expect the Gators defense to make it difficult on Penn State to put together long drives, but I also think Florida will struggle to get the passing game going at all. Both teams will run the ball quite a bit here, and i think the under is the best value on the board.

Remember to stick with HunterSportsPicks all through the rest of the bowl season, and then through college basketball season! Have a great and profitable New Year!
