2011-2012 College Football Previews: Nebraska Cornhuskers

Head Coach: Bo Pellini

2010 Record: 10-4

Nebraska Gambling Odds from JustBet to win BCS: +2,200

Nebraska Odds from JustBet to win Big Ten Legends Division: -285

Nebraska Odds from JustBet to win Big Ten Conference Championship: +150

Change is in the air in college football, and there is no bigger move this year than the Nebraska Cornhuskers moving over to the Big Ten. Nebraska has the fourth most wins of any team in college football history. The Cornhuskers haven’t won anything substantial in the last few years, but Bo Pelini clearly has this team on the right track.

Offense:

Can Taylor Martinez stay healthy all year? Martinez was absolutely sensational in the first half of last season in his freshman campaign with the team, but injuries held him back in a big way late in the year. This offense simply isn’t the same when Martinez is hobbling around. The running game should be one of the best in the nation. Rex Burkhead is a high quality running back, and Martinez is a great runner himself. The Huskers need to find a little bit better balance on offense. Last year they averaged just 150.6 yards per game through the air.

Defense:

The Cornhuskers are solid on offense, but the defense is the true strength of this team. The front seven of this group is nearly unstoppable. Lavonte David set a school record with 152 tackles last year at the linebacker spot. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win the Butkus Award this season. Jared Crick is probably the best defensive linemen in the Big Ten, and he’ll absolutely dominate most of the guys he matches up with this season.

Nebraska Team Strength:

The defensive line for Nebraska is absolutely loaded with talent. The Cornhuskers are led by Crick, who is a star. Baker Steinkuhler is another defensive tackle who appears ready to have a breakout season this year. Nebraska has speed on the edges and big bodies on the interior. What more can you ask from a defensive line?

Nebraska Team Weakness:

Nebraska must cut down on their mistakes. The Cornhuskers were flagged 109 times for 993 yards last season. In addition, Nebraska fumbled the football 45 times in 2010, which is just not acceptable.

2011 Nebraska College Football Prediction: 11-3

The Cornhuskers were given a terribly difficult schedule in their first season in the Big Ten. How do they greeted into the conference? A trip to Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers will get it underway. The following week the Cornhuskers must host Ohio State. Later in the year, Nebraska must travel to Penn State and Michigan in back-to-back weeks. Nebraska is clearly the class of the Big Ten Legends Division, but I just don’t think this team can run the table or dominant with such a difficult schedule. Expect the Cornhuskers to be very good, but don’t expect them to stay in the national title hunt for long.
