2011-2012 College Football Previews: Boise State Broncos

Head Coach: Chris Peterson

2010 Record: 12-1

Boise State Gambling Odds from BetOnline to win BCS: +1,200

Boise State Odds from BetOnline to win Mountain West Conference: -350

Can the Boise State Broncos get a little bit of respect now? This is a team that was seconds (and a short missed field goal) away from being unbeaten last year. Boise State has moved to the Mountain West Conference, which should help some with public perception of the team. The Mountain West isn’t a dominating conference, but it is certainly better than the WAC (where Boise played last season). Boise State appears poised to have another very strong team this season.

Offense

Kellen Moore is under center once again for the Broncos. Moore is the type of quarterback that every coach in the country would love to have. How amazing has Moore been the last two years? He has thrown 74 touchdown passes and just nine interceptions! He has thrown for nearly 11,000 yards in his three years at Boise State. The issue for the offense will be the losses of Titus Young and Austin Pettis. These two were Moore’s two main targets a year ago, and they will be badly missed. Most people forget just how good the Broncos are at running the football. Doug Martin is a bruising runner who carries tacklers for several yards at a time. D.J. Harper should be back and healthy this year, and his quickness will make him a great compliment to Martin in the running game.

Defense

The Boise State defense has been much better than just about anyone has given them credit for in the last few years. Last year’s defense ranked fourth in the nation in total defense, and they allowed just 12.8 points per game. The defensive line should be the strength of this unit. Shea McClellin should dominate offensive tackles all year, and I expect him to improve on his 9.5 sacks from a year ago. Billy Winn and Chase Baker are both great defensive tackles, and they should clog the running lanes very well this season. George Iloka will be the leader in the secondary. This defense should be tremendous again this season.

Team Strength

The Boise State defensive line will be one of the best in the nation. Expect this group to make it extremely difficult for the opposing passer to get the ball off without a hand in his face. The defense as a whole is very underrated, and this defensive line is as good as you’ll see in college football.

Team Weakness

Who will be the play makers on the outside? Kellen Moore is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, but replacing Young and Pettis will be difficult. Boise must find some receivers that Moore can trust.

2011 Boise State College Football Schedule

The Broncos travel to Georgia to play the Bulldogs in week one of the season. If the Broncos win that one, they definitely have a chance to win out. Boise State gets both TCU and Nevada at home this season. Overall, this is definitely an easy schedule.

2011 Boise State Football Prediction: 12-1

I expect Boise to have a season quite similar to last year. The loss of play makers on the outside might slow the offense down a bit, but they’ll still be excellent. The defense will dominate most of their opponents. I’ll pick Boise to slip up in one game, but it wouldn’t shock me to see them win out.
