Alabama Crimson Tide 2011-2012 College Football Predictions

Coach: Nick Saban

Alabama Gambling Odds from 5Dimes

Alabama Odds to win the BCS Championship: +725

Alabama Odds to win SEC West: -120

Alabama Odds to win SEC Conference Championship Game: +205

The Crimson Tide were 10-3 and they blasted Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl, but overall the season was viewed as a disappointment by most fans. Nick Saban has built an absolute powerhouse in Tuscaloosa, and the community, which was ravaged by a tornado a few months ago, is really in need of a boost this year. Expect Alabama to be playing with a little extra fire this season.

Offense

A.J. McCarron is the frontrunner to get the starting quarterback position, but Phillip Sims is also in the hunt. Both of these guys have plenty of talent, but neither has much experience at all. There are bound to be some growing pains at this position. Whoever the quarterback is will benefit from a tremendous rushing attack. Trent Richardson is one of my favorites to win the Heisman Trophy this year. Richardson can do it all in the backfield, and he’ll be running behind a veteran offensive line that should be one of the best in the SEC. The offense may take a small step back with the loss of Greg McElroy and Julio Jones, but this unit will still be very good.

Defense

Does this defense have any real weaknesses? This unit was supposed to be down last year because of their youth, but they only allowed more than 20 points in three games last season. Hightower is one of the best linebackers in the nation, and Barron is a great leader for the secondary. The Crimson Tide have plenty of power and depth at the front of the defense, and everyone on this unit can run. This will be one of the best defenses in the nation this year.

Alabama Team Strength

It’s tough to find one particular area of the defense that stands out as the single biggest strength, but the defense as a whole has the ability to be the best defense in the country. This defense should keep Alabama in every game this year.

Alabama Team Weakness

The quarterback position is definitely a question mark. The running game will be very good, but against the best defenses Alabama will need to have some balance on offense. Saban needs the quarterback to manage the game effectively and not make too many mistakes. Can either McCarron or Sims do that?

2011 Alabama College Football Schedule

A trip to Happy Valley on September 17 could be tricky, but the rest of the non-conference schedule is easy. The September 24 game at home against Arkansas will be a good measuring stick for this team. Also, keep an eye on the November 12 meeting with Mississippi State. Overall, this schedule isn’t as tough as some in the SEC.

2011 Alabama Football Prediction: 12-2

I fully expect Alabama to finish in the top 6 or 8 this season, but I don’t think this team will be able to win it all with an inexperienced quarterback. The SEC is a very difficult conference, and Alabama will likely lose a game or two during conference play. I like Richardson’s chances to be invited to New York City for the Heisman announcement in December. I’ll predict a 12-2 record from Alabama this season.
